POST DOCTORAL RESEARCH STAFF MEMBER

NATURE and SCOPE OF JOB
The Physical and Life Sciences Directorate has an opening for a Post Doctoral Research Staff
Member to conduct research in the areas of environmental microbiology and bioremediation.  The
staff member will actively participate in research and project development.  This staff member
must have a strong commitment to collaborative research and will closely work with an
interdisciplinary team of microbiologists, biochemists, geochemists and computational biologists
from both the Biosciences and Biotechnology Division and the Chemical Sciences Division. 
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
!  Conduct research in environmental microbiology and microbial physiology.  Organize
and analyze data.
!  Design, culture microbes to characterize microbial physiology for systems biology
studies. 
!  Collaborate in the design and execution of experiments to study the interaction of cells,
biofilms, and exudates with environmental contaminants and geomedia.
!  Maintain and establish laboratory protocols.
!  Contribute to the conception, design and execution of research to address defined
problems.
!  Publish completed research in peer-reviewed journals.
 
ESSENTIAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
!  Recent PhD in microbial physiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, biogeochemistry,
analytical chemistry or related field.
!  Research experience in microbial and biofilm physiology. 
!  Demonstrated ability to develop independent research projects through publication of
peer-reviewed manuscripts.
!  Demonstrated effective communication skills through presentation of seminars and
meetings and/or teaching lectures.
!  Demonstrated leadership skills with desire and ability to work in a collaborative,
multidisciplinary team environment.   
!  Documented publication record.
 
DESIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
!  Skills in analytical chemistry such as GC and HPLC or other related skills.
!  Experience in studying the role of microorganisms on contaminant behavior at
environmental conditions.
!  Experience in bioremediation and subsurface (bio)geochemistry.
